Naftali Bennett, the former prime minister and current chairman of the B'Yachad party, was the focus of a security incident in Tel Aviv on Saturday night. During a public rally, a 23-year-old man from Givatayim was arrested for allegedly shoving one of the security personnel assigned to protect the politician. The event was organized to call for the creation of a commission of inquiry into the failures that led to the October 7 massacre.
The financial and political stakes are rising as the country moves closer to the 2026 Knesset elections. The incident occurred just days before the general election, with soldiers in the IDF already having cast their ballots at military polling stations earlier this week. This timing places the event squarely in the middle of a critical period for market stability and political direction.
According to sources, the suspect appeared to be under the influence of alcohol when the altercation began. He attempted to close the distance between himself and the security detail surrounding Bennett. While doing so, he shouted the slogan "Only Bibi," a phrase used to express support for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
The security team was tasked with maintaining a clear perimeter around the former prime minister. Despite verbal instructions from the guards to stay back, the man continued to push forward. One of the officers made physical contact to push the suspect away from the group. The man did not retreat as requested. Instead, he turned to confront the guard and shoved him in return.
Police officers arrived at the park shortly after the physical exchange. They apprehended the suspect and transported him to a local police station for questioning. The immediate response by the security team was to subdue the man and hold him at the scene until law enforcement arrived to take custody.
Initial checks conducted by investigators revealed that the suspect has no prior criminal record. The police are currently examining the specific circumstances of the incident to determine if any further action is required. The man is being held for questioning as part of the standard procedure following an altercation at a high-profile political event.
Bennett served as the head of the government from June 2021 to June 2022. His current role as a party chairman keeps him at the center of the political discourse in the lead up to the upcoming vote. The incident highlights the heightened security measures required for political figures during this sensitive pre-election period.
