The defending champion secured her spot in the Ningbo Open final after a hard-fought semifinal victory. Elena Rybakina defeated the sixth seed, Diana Shnaider, in straight sets with scores of 6-3 and 7-5.

This result positions the world number one for a potential consecutive title. It also serves as a significant statement to her rivals ahead of the upcoming WTA Finals next month. Rybakina, who holds the Australian Open and US Open titles, enters the final as the favorite.

Her path to the championship was not without recent setbacks. She suffered a heavy loss in Beijing prior to this tournament. Additionally, she had to withdraw from the Wuhan event due to a foot injury. These difficulties made her performance in Ningbo all the more notable.

Rybakina faced a distinct challenge against the 13th-ranked Shnaider. The Russian player utilized a left-handed style that proved troublesome for the Kazakh star. While Rybakina produced flashes of her elite game, the match required considerable effort to secure.

The opening set saw Rybakina take control with an aggressive start. She hit powerful winners from deep in the court but experienced a dip in form. She ultimately sealed the set on her 11th set point. The second set followed a similar trajectory of struggle and resilience.

Rybakina continued to battle with her first-serve accuracy in the second set. She won key points to move ahead 4-3 with a break. However, she was broken to love in the 10th game. She answered with big hitting to retake the lead and served assuredly to close out the match.

The unseeded Canadian Leylah Fernandez will be Rybakina’s opponent in Sunday’s final. Fernandez earned her place by defeating Czech player Marie Bouzkova. The scoreline was identical to the other semifinal, ending 6-3 and 7-5 at the Yinzhou International Tennis Centre.

Rybakina acknowledged the difficulty of facing left-handed opponents. She noted that there are not many such players on the tour. Fernandez presents the same challenge, requiring Rybakina to adapt her patterns during rallies. The world number one aims to sharpen her game further before moving to the Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo.

After Tokyo, Rybakina will begin the defense of her WTA Finals title at Indian Wells on November 8. Regarding the prospect of winning back-to-back trophies in Ningbo, she remained measured. She stated that she would fight and give her all in tomorrow’s match.
