Nicolas Jackson Breaks Manchester City's Perfect League Record at Villa Park

Two goals from the striker ended Manchester City's unbeaten run and secured a vital win for Aston Villa.

Manchester City's perfect start to the Premier League season came to an abrupt end on Saturday. The club suffered its first defeat of the campaign with a 2-1 loss at Aston Villa. Nicolas Jackson scored both goals for the home side, leading Unai Emery's restructured squad to a decisive victory.

The result marks a significant shift in the league standings. Enzo Maresca had previously become the first manager to win his first seven Premier League matches while in charge of a new club. However, his team could not find a solution at Villa Park. This stadium has become a difficult place for City, as they have now lost in each of the last four seasons at this venue.

The match began with a surprise blow for the visitors. Just six minutes into the game, Aston Villa took the lead. A heavy touch from Marc Guehi created an opening for Jackson. The forward cut inside to the right of Elliott Anderson and fired a high shot that flew past Gianluigi Donnarumma in the City goal.

For much of the first half, City maintained control of possession. However, they struggled to convert that dominance into goals. Villa goalkeeper Zion Suzuki was a key factor in keeping the scoreline low. He made saves to stop Iliman Ndiaye, Rayan Cherki, and Abdukodir Khusanov. Ndiaye also struck the post, keeping Villa in the game despite the pressure.

City finally broke through in the 52nd minute. Erling Haaland headed home a cross from Ndiaye to pull one back. This goal marked Haaland's 13th strike in just 10 appearances this season. Shortly after, Josko Gvardiol had a chance to put City ahead, but his powerful drive was turned onto the crossbar by Suzuki.

Aston Villa responded on the hour mark to reclaim the lead. Ibrahim Mbaye was played in behind the City defense and delivered a cross. Jackson finished low with a shot that should have been stopped by Donnarumma. City pushed hard for an equalizer in the remaining time but could not find another way past the Villa defense.

This win places Arsenal in a strong position. If the Gunners beat Everton at home later on Saturday, they will move level on points with Manchester City at the top of the table. For Villa, the result represents a sixth win in their last seven games across all competitions. The victory also lifts them to sixth place in the league.

The performance highlights the progress Emery has made since arriving four years ago. He has transformed Villa from a dormant force into a Champions League contender. This success continues despite a significant turnover in the squad. Six players who started last season's Europa League final left during the transfer window.

The summer acquisitions are already showing their value. Jackson, Suzuki, Mbaye, and Johan Manzambi have contributed effectively, helping the team overcome a slow start to the season. Their presence has stabilized a squad that underwent considerable changes.

The defeat comes as City navigates uncertainty regarding its financial future. The 10-time English champions are appealing a guilty verdict on more than 100 charges of breaking financial rules between 2009 and 2018. Potential sanctions include heavy fines or even relegation. While the players showed little sign of being affected by this cloud, two defensive errors proved costly at Villa Park.
